SFCC Beyond the Basics: Unlocking Hidden Power (Series Intro)

An introduction to underutilised SFCC features — how campaigns can be combined with content slots, sorting rules, and customer groups to create targeted personalisation that most implementations never touch.

Salesforce B2C Commerce Cloud is packed with features designed to boost your online store’s success. However, many of these powerful tools go unused or underutilised by store owners and developers alike. This series — SFCC Beyond the Basics — exists to change that.

Campaigns: More Than You Think

Let’s start with Campaigns. Campaigns are a common element of any SFCC store, but their true capabilities are routinely overlooked.

Most SFCC developers and merchandisers have used Campaigns — merchandisers often rely on them as part of their daily work. But here is the thing: the most common use observed across SFCC implementations is using Campaigns simply as timers for promotions, occasionally combined with content slots. That barely scratches the surface of what is possible.

What You Are Missing

When you expand beyond promotions and start combining all three campaign components — promotions, content slots, and sorting rules — and amplify them with the power of customer groups, you can create truly personalised experiences that drive loyalty and sales in ways most SFCC stores never attempt.

Here are two concrete examples of what becomes possible:

Example 1: Birthday Recognition

Imagine a significant brand featuring a personalised “Happy Birthday, [Your Name]!” banner on their homepage, complete with a special discount just for you. This is entirely achievable with Campaigns and Customer Groups — no custom development required.

Example 2: Product Replenishment Reminders

Consider a customer who regularly purchases a specific face serum from your store. With Campaigns and Content Slots, you can create a targeted banner reminding them to restock before they run out — timed based on their purchase history.

The Untapped Potential

By combining all campaign components with customer groups, the possibilities extend further:

  • Exclusive early access to new products for VIP shoppers
  • Location-specific promotions that make customers feel genuinely seen
  • Personalised sorting on category pages based on individual shopping behaviour
  • Dynamic top bar messages that match the content of a marketing email a customer just clicked through

What’s Coming in This Series

In the next part, we will go through the full Business Manager configuration for the birthday banner example — step by step. From there, the series will continue exploring advanced campaign strategies and other underutilised SFCC features.
